The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics belongs to the School of Health Sciences of the University of the Peloponnese, was established in 2019 (Legislation 4610/2019) and operates from the Academic Year 2019-2020. The Department is located in a new building in the University Campus in Antikalamos, Messinia, approximately seven (7) kilometers from the center of Kalamata.
In the same building operates the Department of Speech and Language Therapy, while the campus houses the Departments of the School of Agriculture and Food and the Departments the School of Management. The campus covers an area of approximately 100 acres and includes a modern Library, a well-equipped printing unit, a comfortable restaurant, sports fields and greenhouses. Also, a Student Hostel operates in the city of Kalamata. The Department has modern teaching rooms and auditoriums, as well as a new well-equipped Laboratory of Biochemistry, Exercise Physiology, Physiology and Pharmacology. In addittion, some laboratory courses take place at the labs of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Food Science and Technology.
The Department’s mission is to educate new scientists specialized in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Department aims at providing an in-depth, evidence-based and critical thinking approach, for students to obtain knowledge and skills to practice nutrition in health and disease, improve dietary habits in special population groups and individuals and enhance quality of life and well-being of the general population. To achieve its goals, the Department covers a wide range of academic subjects, such as Nutrition, Food Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Metabolism, Pathophysiology, Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition and Exercise, Public Health and others, combining theory and laboratory teaching along with students’ placement for undergraduate studies.
The Undergraduate Study Program applies modern teaching and learning methods, such as teacher-centered methods, learner-centered methods, e-class learning, role-playing and interactive participation methods. It compines theory and laboratory exercises along with practical training. The Program duration is four (4) years and the modules are divided into eight (8) semesters. Prerequisites for obtaining the degree are: the successful examination of all modules, successful attendance of the Students’ Placement and successful submission of the Senior Thesis.
